The idea of a Model Code was originally conceived by the Committee for Professionalism (CFP) early in 1998 and after much discussion with representatives from the various central banks and foreign exchange committees, we concluded it was indeed a worthy project and one on which we should embark.

The mandate for this ambitious undertaking was finally received from the ACI Council in November 1998 at the Sydney meeting. Following many long and arduous sessions with the author that included drafting, discussion, editing and feedback, the CFP is honoured to present this first edition of The Model Code.

We hope The Model Code will prove a useful guide to the best conduct and practice for all market participants. Given the dynamic nature of the financial markets and the varying practices in different geographical locations, our aim is essentially to distill the core best practices in the foreign exchange, money and related derivative markets under one Code.

We do feel we have generally achieved this and with the regular review procedure in place, it is our intention to keep The Model Code current and relevant as we respond to and anticipate changes in the market and regulatory environment.
